Dissociative recombination angular distributions

چکیده

The angular distributions of the products of dissociative recombination of diatomic molecular ions are derived. The distributions are determined by the dominant partial waves of the captured electrons. For a single dominant wave, the neutral product distribution is described by the same spherical harmonic that describes the electron partial wave. The derived distributions take into account both direct and indirect dissociative recombination and are essential for modeling the projected distributions measured in storage ring experiments. All prior storage ring experiments have assumed that the product angular distributions can be described by spherical harmonics with angular momenta ≤ 1 and isotropic product distributions for ”zero” eV electron capture. These assumptions are tested here by deriving the projected distributions for the dissociative recombination of CH. For CH, it is shown that the ”zero” eV storage ring experimental results cannot be explained by only isotropic dissociation. Instead, an anisotropic model product distribution is required. The anisotropic model yields a quantum yield of 1.0 for C(D) instead of the incorrect value of 0.79 derived previously using an isotropic model. The quantum yields of all prior storage ring experiments on other molecular ions at ”zero” eV electron energy must be reassessed in view of these findings.

Product angular distributions in dissociative recombination.

The dependence of the dissociative recombination cross section upon the angle between the incoming electron beam and the ion internuclear axis is determined for diatomic molecules. Product angular distributions are derived for the component partial waves of the Coulomb wave function. In agreement with earlier results for dissociative attachment, it is shown that in the slow rotation approximati...

The vibrational dependence of dissociative recombination: cross sections for N2+.

Theoretical ab initio calculations are reported of the cross sections for dissociative recombination of the lowest four excited vibrational levels of N2(+) at electron energies from 0.001 to 1.0 eV. Rydberg vibrational levels contributing to the cross section structures are identified as are dissociative channels contributing more than 10(-16) cm(2) to the total cross sections. In contrast to t...

Energy and angular distributions in dissociative photodetachment of O4

An anisotropic product angular distribution has been observed in the dissociative photodetachment of O4 2 at 523 nm. Energy and angular distributions of coincident O2 products from the process O4 1hn→O21O21e were measured using translational energy spectroscopy in a fast ion beam. The angular distribution peaks perpendicular to the electric vector of the laser beam. © 1995 American Institute of...

Dissociative recombination of CH+: Cross section and final states.

The cross section as well as the branching ratios for the dissociative recombination of ground-state CH ions with electrons have been measured using the heavy-ion storage-ring technique and two-dimensional fragment imaging. Although the absolute value of the cross section at thermal energies is found to be in very good agreement with the theory, several unpredicted narrow resonances are also pr...

Effects of orbital symmetries in dissociative ionization of molecules by few-cycle laser pulses

We have measured angular distributions of ion fragments produced in dissociative double ionization of CO, CO2, and C2H2 by intense ultrashort laser pulses. This report extends similar recent studies of O2 and N2 to a wider set of molecules. We found that for sub-10-fs pulses of sufficiently low intensity the fragments’ angular distributions for all studied molecules are determined by angular de...
